Keowee-Toxaway State Park sits on 1,000 acres of Upstate South Carolina forest in the small community of Sunset, about 35 minutes from Clemson and 20 minutes north of Seneca. It's managed by SC State Parks and — this is the part that still surprises people — admission is completely free. You pay nothing to walk in, hike, picnic, or photograph. It's one of the most beautiful free things in this corner of the state.

In the late afternoon, that lake-facing light turns the whole scene honey gold. I schedule all my sessions at golden hour — about an hour before sunset — and at Keowee-Toxaway, that timing is genuinely transformative. The park stays open until 9 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time, which means we have all the golden hour we need.

This spot is perfect for: Active families with school-age kids and teens. Couples and engagement sessions. Families and multigenerational sessions where grandparents are comfortable on gentle trails.

One thing to know: Pack water, snacks, and comfortable shoes. The park is beautifully minimal on facilities, and that wildness is exactly what makes it special. Plan to arrive with enough time to walk to your spot before the light peaks — I'll help you plan the timing when we book.

If Keowee-Toxaway is the dramatic one, High Falls County Park is the joyful one. This is where the barefoot chaos happens — where I watch kids sprint toward the water while grandma laughs from the picnic table — and where some of my favorite unscripted moments have come from. It's a 46-acre county park on the shores of Lake Keowee, about 10 miles north of Seneca on Highway 183, and it costs five dollars per car to get in. That's it. Five dollars for your whole family to spend the evening on one of the most beautiful lakes in South Carolina.

If you're local and planning to come back often, Oconee County offers an annual pass for just $25 for county residents. At $5 a visit it pays for itself in five trips.

This spot is perfect for: Families with young children and toddlers — this is genuinely my top recommendation for under-fives, because there's space to roam and the energy is naturally relaxed. Multigenerational sessions where you want a casual, summer-day feel. Any family who wants that dreamy lakeside light without hiking to get it. Dog owners. Anyone who's been imagining their kids playing on the water's edge while the golden hour wraps around them.

One thing to know: Arrive a little early so the little ones can run off some energy before we settle into photos.

South Cove County Park

South Cove is my quiet secret for sessions that need to do a lot of different things at once — and it's the location I recommend most often for multigenerational sessions, because it gives everyone something and asks very little of anyone in return.

This 48-acre county park sits right on Lake Keowee on the south end of the lake near Seneca, and what makes it visually unique is its peninsula setting. You're essentially surrounded by water on three sides, which means almost any direction you point the camera, you have lake in the frame. That kind of built-in variety — open sky and water behind, tree-backed shoreline to one side, a weathered pier to the other — means we can create images that feel completely different from each other without ever having to load everyone back into the car. For a multigenerational group with grandparents, toddlers, and teenagers all needing slightly different things, that matters.

Like High Falls, South Cove charges $5 per car for day use, with an annual pass available for $25 for Oconee County residents, and free for seniors 62 and older, veterans, and those with documented disabilities. The park also has a playground, pickleball and tennis courts, a basketball court, restrooms, and three boat ramps. It's well-maintained, easy to navigate, and rarely feels crowded in the evenings when the day-trippers have gone home and the light has turned everything warm.

The west-facing water here catches stunning late afternoon light — the lake goes from its characteristic bright blue-green in the afternoon to something deeper and more golden as the sun drops. I schedule sessions here to peak right in that window, and the images we make in the last 45 minutes before sunset are consistently some of the most beautiful I've ever taken at a public location.

This spot is perfect for: Multigenerational sessions — this is my first recommendation when grandparents are part of the session, especially if mobility is a consideration. Larger extended family groups who need variety without trekking from one location to another. Families who want that open-water, pier-at-sunset image. Anyone who wants a session that feels unhurried and spacious, with room for everyone to find their comfortable place.

One thing to know: The Lighthouse Restaurant is located right here at the park address — a lakeside restaurant. I love suggesting to families that they book a table after their session. You've already got everyone together, the kids are happy and tired, and you get to end the evening with dinner on the water while the images are still fresh in everyone's mind. It turns a photo session into a whole experience — which is exactly the kind of memory that makes the photos mean even more when you look at them later.

A note on timing: why I shoot at golden hour

You’ll notice I mention light a lot. That’s because at Lake Keowee, the hour before sunset transforms these locations — the water glows, the harsh shadows disappear, and everyone looks their best without squinting. It’s why all my sessions are scheduled for golden hour.
